In 1981, Riccardo Patrese drove the Arrows A3 (powered by a Ford-Cosworth V8) and had an acrimonious but less troubled season than previous years, despite a disastrous Zolder race where his car stalled on the grid and was hit by his teammate Siegfried Stohr, resulting in a seriously injured mechanic, Dave Luckett. His best result was a 7th-place finish at Zandvoort, and he finished 11th in the championship standings with 10 points.
